VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION is OPEN
Thank you to all our volunteers who are truly the heart and soul of house league hockey. The more involvement we have, the stronger our Association is and the better the hockey experience will be for players and parents alike.
Together as volunteers, we can help to make hockey safe for our community.
Youth aged under 20 may become on-ice helpers as described on the HEO website.
Volunteer Requirements (for those 16 years or older)
Any and all volunteers must complete the following 5 mandatory requirements. This applies to all volunteers (on-ice helpers, managers, trainers, coaches, assistant coaches, convenors, board members, etc.). Please note: volunteers will be reimbursed for their expenses as long as they were pre-approved.
Returning Volunteers: Complete requirement #1 below asap. You may already have completed the other 3 requirements.
How do I check my qualifications? Log in to your new HCR 3.0 to check your Qualifications with Hockey Canada (this will only work if you already registered as a volunteer as in #1 below). If you are having trouble, refer to the how-to guides below:
How to Create Your New HCR 3.0 Account (new in 2021)
How to Link Your Qualifications to Your New HCR 3.0 Account (new in 2021)
#1: Register as a Volunteer with Hockey Canada at this link: CASE Volunteer Registration
- Frequency: All volunteers must register with Hockey Canada once a year, at the beginning of the season
- Cost: free
- Details: Log in to your family account and select "Register a participant". Enter your name and birthday, and the system will recognize that you are a volunteer and will prompt you to select "Volunteer".
- Note: If you are having trouble registering as a volunteer, there is a chance that your Hockey Canada profile is with another association. It is also possible that your name is spelled differently. Please contact our registrar who can search for your profile in the system. Provide the registrar with your DOB and your full name (include any common variations of your name, such as Chris/Christopher).
#2: Police Records Check: Vulnerable Sector Check (deadline: Must have applied for this before participating as a volunteer with children)
- Every volunteer aged 18+ must hold a valid Police Records Check Level 3 -- Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)
- Frequency: The VSC is valid for 3 hockey seasons (it expires on August 31st of the 3rd season)
- Cost: $20.00 or free of charge. If you are charged $20, this is refundable for pre-approved volunteers as long as you applied using the CASE Volunteer Waiver Letter
- How to apply for my Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)?
To begin the online application, go to Police Record Check. The VSC can be completed online if you meet certain conditions. You will need a copy of the CASE Volunteer Waiver Letter (SEMHA) with your name and your volunteer position added. Print the letter, add your name and position, and then upload the letter when you are completing the application.
- How long does it take? The online process only takes a few days for most applicants.
- For more information: Vulnerable Sector Check
#3: Respect in Sport Activity Leader Program
- Frequency: This is a 1-time requirement. However, a breach of the Code of Conduct could result in the requirement to repeat the course.
- Cost: $20
- Details: This is a 3-hour online course. This is different (and longer) than the Respect in Sport Parent Program which is only one hour online. The volunteer must register for, pay, and complete the course. CHA will refund the cost of the course once the volunteer is deemed to be fully qualified. Important: Volunteers with CHA must be sure to register as a member of CASE Hockey (i.e. Canterbury & SouthEnd Minor Hockey Associations). If you register via another association, you will be charged a non-refundable processing fee. Go to the Respect in Sport course online for Activity Leaders and select "Register a New User" to get started.
- Timeframe: Must be received before the volunteer participates in any on or off-ice team activity.
#4:- Gender Identity Training
- Frequency: only once in your CHA volunteering career. If you are unsure whether you completed the courses, you can consult your account with the Hockey Canada University Portal.
- Cost: free of charge
- Details: These 2 online courses are mandated by HEO for all team officials as a one-time requirement. Course titles: Understanding Discrimination based on Gender Identity and Gender Expression and A Guide to the Dressing Room Policy and Confidentiality Statement.
Coaches and Trainers have additional requirements:
Coaches:
Each team needs at least one certified head coach and should have a certified assistant coach for backup (for when the head coach is absent). Development stream certification is not required at house league levels, therefore CHA will not reimburse for these courses unless approved before attending. Please contact our registrar for further information.
Trainers:
Each group on the ice needs at least one certified trainer present for all ice times.
